About this photo: “Sometimes abstract photos capture my moods even better than photos I take of people, places or things. They’re unexpected, unpredictable, and change from one frame to the next, much like my moods. I took this one sleepless night, on the move, dancing around with a glow stick and my camera. To me, it evokes mania/hypomania and insomnia emerging from the darkness of depression.“

Photo taken by contributor Brandon who has suffered from depression and severe anxiety for as long as he can remember. He is also a self-harm survivor. His anxiety hit its peak when he was in 11th grade. He was at school and ended up fainting on the steps. After that, he was put on anti-depressants. He can’t say they fully helped the depression, but at least they stopped the fainting.

About this photo: “Delicacy is the first image of a new series I’m working on combining the nude body and surreal/abstract landscapes. I chose a 1×1 aspect ratio because I want the focus to be on the vulnerability of the human body and the beauty that comes with it.”

She suffered from a severe depressive episode at the age of 25, which turned into psychosis, and led to a three month hospitalization. Fortunately, she got better quite quickly and got her life back on track. She found love after getting out of the hospital. Her life changed drastically when her partner was paralyzed in December of 2012. It has been hard ever since. They are both fighting to keep from getting too depressed. Life goes on and they try to stay strong. She has been interested in photography for many years, but began actively exploring it over the last four years. Before her partner’s accident, she had made up her mind and quit her day job to pursue being a photographer. Now she is working on making her dream a reality.

Kait’s primary diagnosis recently changed from Major Depression to Bipolar Disorder. She has also struggled with anxiety and disordered eating. She is currently an undergraduate at Washington University in Saint Louis where she studies Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies and Creative Writing. Her primary mediums are poetry and photography, though she has also been known to dabble in printmaking and other genres of writing. She seeks to understand her experiences and to connect with others through her art.

About this photo: “I love photographing people, documenting myself and others. This is a photo of a beautiful red-haired model I photographed when I was still very new to photography in an alleyway near the apartment I was renting in Saint Louis.”
